The Nationa Park of Muránska planina (Muráň Plain) represents a geomorphologically significant karst territory. It offers visitors not only excellent tourism suitable for all ages, beautiful nature, but also enchanting karst phenomena, such as grikes, karst pits, sinkholes, gorges, rock towers, cliffs etc.
A unique feature of the Muráň Plain is the Ice Pit, which attracts great attention from Slovak as well as foreign tourists every year. It is a mysterious underground place that is full of ice and cold throughout the year. This cave (abyss) was created by the erosion of water in the Wetterstein limestones from the Triassic period.
At present, the Ice Pit is a natural monument and can be found at an altitude of 1165 m, on a karst mountain meadow called the Well. It is interesting to note that this site has created suitable natural conditions for the preservation and life of the unique relict species of the ice age.
The vast cave is 24 meters deep and 64 meters long. There is a small observation deck built for visitors above its mouth. A hunting lodge with a shelter is also nearby and can be used to relax or shelter from bad weather.
Access here is from Muráň or Pohorelská Maša (about 10 km) and marked cycling paths and asphalt road are situated around.
