Few people suspect that there are two smaller water treasures near our most famous and largest Strbské pleso. Lakes of love were originally called Štrba ponds. The founder of Štrbské Pleso - Jozef Szentiványi used them as ponds for trout breeding. Today, the ponds do not serve their original purpose, but they have become a pleasant place to relax not only for young couples.
The origin of the of the romantic name of the lakes is unclear and we can only guess why the original Štrba ponds became the Lakes of Love. While one of the versions says that visitors of the spa in love are to blame, who liked to enjoy their free time here in the company of their other halves, according to others, the reason is the very proximity of the lakes. They lie right next to each other and give the impression that they are inseparable.
In the vicinity of the ponds there is a paved path and benches. The path to the lakes is marked by signs and leads from the parking lot opposite the tourist hostel, from which it is only a short distance. There is also an information board near the ponds, from which you can learn more about the history of this place.
It is interesting that there is a Slovak double cross at the bottom of the larger of the lakes. It used to stand out at Štrbské pleso, unfortunately in the 60s of the last century, during a visit to the pond, it interfered with the then president Antonín Novotný, and therefore, on his instructions, it was removed and buried at the bottom of one of the lakes.
