Greater Rozsutec (1 610 m above sea level) is located in the northeastern part of the main ridge of Krivánská Little Fatra. With its form and height, it dominates the whole surroundings and is considered to be the most beautiful mountain in Slovakia.
In the past, it was said that Jánošík's golden treasure is hidden in the vicinity of the peak. Today, in addition to mysterious rumours, it is especially popular because one of the trails leading from Terchová through attractive and exposed Jánošík's Holes. Also popular is the round trip from Štefanová through Podžiar, which is 10 km long and will take you about 5 hours to return to Štefanová.
The ascent to Veľký Rozsutec is rightly ranked among demanding tourism. Not only diverse and rugged terrain, steep climb, but also overcoming of the great differences in height are waiting for you.
However, if you overcome all the pitfalls, at the top you get an incredibly beautiful circular view of the surroundings. Hills like Little Rozsutec, Stoh, Pilsko or deep valleys will proudly present their beauty.
A hiking trail is regularly closed from 1 March to 15 June.
In addition to tourism, Greater Rozsutec is an important locality with endemic, rare and precious species of flora and fauna. Given this fact, it is also the centre of the Rozsutec National Nature Reserve.
