Starhrad, i.e. The Old Castle, stands on a rocky granite hill on the right bank of the Váh River. Its original name was Varín Castle, but after the construction of Strečno Castle, the name "Old Castle (Starhrad)" started to be used.
The Old Castle guarded the trade route, toll was also collected. The castle began to descend at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. That's why Pongráczi noble family wanted to demolish it and built two mansions in Krasňany and Nededza instead of the castle.
The riots in 17th century influenced the original decision to demolish the Old Castle. The family kept the building and much more cared for its maintenance, expansion and equipment. The castle proved to be very useful mostly in a turbulent period. In the first half of the 17th century, minor modifications and finishings of a building were made. The use of the castle was also forced by the disaster that hit the newly built manor house in Krasňany, which burned down. Its recovery took several years. The castle then defended Thököly's rebels even without modern fortifications. The Pongráczi family lost interest in the castle in the 18th century. Since the, the castle has gradually decayed up to the present time.
The ruins of the castle can be reached from the bridge in Nezbudská Lúčka in about 1 hour along the marked hiking trail. At the Old Castle, you can also be enchanted by the unique view of Domašínský meander of Váh river.
