An interesting nook in Košice, which breathes history, is Pushkin Street. Since 1927, the Jewish synagogue stands here, which includes the building of the Jewish school and school for rabbis. At that time, the Jews accounted for 20% of the total number of Košice citizens, and thus contributed a great deal to the industrial, commercial and cultural development of the city.
In terms of architecture, the Orthodox Synagogue carries historical and oriental elements as well as elements of modernism, especially cubism. The interior of the synagogue is extremely interesting and its window-panes is considered the most beautiful in Košice. On the walls you can see pencil-written messages of Jews who were gathered there before being transported to concentration camps. On the external facade, there is a memorial plaque in memory of Jews deported to concentration camps.
The Orthodox synagogue on Pushkin Street was the only one to fulfill its purpose even after the war. Today, it is nicely reconstructed. The synagogue is open to the public during the Jewish Košice events organized by the Jewish Religious Community in Košice.
