The town of Kremnica and its immediate surroundings are known for its former mining activity. This site, thanks to its gold and silver reserves, was one of the most important mining centers in Hungary in the Middle Ages.
A rare phenomenon of the remnant of mining activity, but also with the taste of bitterness, is the Šturec mining drop. It is a natural - technical work that is unique in the perception of neighboring states. Its origin is justified by several factors - geological structure, mining activity and also by an earthquake, which took place in 1443 here.
In this earthquake, with the epicenter in Žilina, a part of the mine with the number of victims was buried, according to family chronicles, it was 90 - 450 miners. Nowadays, this disaster is reminded by a monument built on the edge of the abyss.
The Šturec drop has a length of 700 m, a width of 250 m and a max. depth of 170 m. This remarkable location includes an educational trail "In the Footsteps of Mining Activity 1", which begins in Kremnica. It will lead you through the major mining sites to the top of Schultersberg Hill, which rises directly above the overflow. From here, there is a nice view of the part of Kremnica Mine.
