The free royal mining town of Kremnica has not lost its historical charm even in today's modern age. It is one of the few cities in Slovakia that has preserved its magnificent period character.
Many visitors to Kremnica are hit by the epochal Town Castle at first sight. It is a complex of medieval buildings of different mission, which were built over three centuries, from the mid-13th to the end of the 15th century.
The town castle rises on a hill above the central square of Kremnica. It is protected by fortifications, on which the city walls are preserved. The whole area of the Municipal Castle is a national cultural monument.
The central part of the Town Castle, as well as the entire Kremnica, is dominated by the magnificent late Gothic Church of St. Catherine. However, you can also see other architectural treasures in the premises of the Town Castle too. These are the premises of four buildings - the Romanesque Karner, the Little Tower, the Northern Tower and the Town Hall. There are permanent expositions placed in each object.
Kremnica Town Castle is administered by the Museum of Coins and Medals in Kremnica. Entrance fees apply and the tour takes about 2 hours.
